Prof.dr. Pieter van Doorn (P.A.)

Neurologist, head of department of neuromuscular diseases

Short introduction

The diagnosis and treatment of patients with muscle diseases must continue to improve. By combining optimal care, scientific research, and teamwork, this is achievable. Together with our team, I am committed to contributing to this mission.

Work experience

After becoming a neurologist, I further specialized in neuromuscular diseases at Erasmus MC. In addition to patient care, teaching, and research, I now devote much of my time to (inter)national committees aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with polyneuropathy. We have built a highly successful research group. Our research focuses primarily on immune-mediated polyneuropathies (Guillain-Barré syndrome, CIDP), Pompe disease (within the Center for Lysosomal and Metabolic Diseases), and epidemiological research on polyneuropathy (ERGO study). I was recently elected President of the Peripheral Nerve Society (PNS).

Education

I studied medicine at Erasmus University Rotterdam (1984). I subsequently conducted neuroimmunological research at LUMC and Erasmus MC. During my neurology residency at Erasmus MC, I completed my PhD (1990). I then joined the neurology department as a staff neurologist and further specialized in neuromuscular diseases. Since 2003, I have been a professor of neuromuscular diseases, with a special focus on immune-mediated disorders.
