Excellent patient care and innovative research

Broadly specialized in metabolic diseases

The Center for Lysosomal and Metabolic Diseases is an internationally recognized center of expertise for all metabolic diseases and stands for innovation. Clinicians and basic scientists work together to deliver the best patient care, to develop and apply new treatments, and do high-quality diagnostics.

Given the rarity of many metabolic diseases and the complexity of diagnosis, follow-up and treatment, the presence of expert centers is desirable. Within the Netherlands, the Center for Lysosomal and Metabolic Diseases is one of 6 metabolic centers fulfilling this role.

Our center, located at the Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, provides tailored multidisciplinary care and treatment to patients with complex metabolic disorders from the whole South West region of the Netherlands.

Within the center, the departments of Pediatrics, Clinical Genetics, Hospital Pharmacy, Internal Medicine and Neurology work together structurally on scientific research, education and, above all, patient care. Both children and adult patients are seen at our center. Transition from pediatric to adult care is highly prioritized in center. Because of a close collaboratin between pediatricians and adult physicians we are able to follow the patients throughout their lives.

We are recognized by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport as a national center of expertise for all hereditary metabolic diseases. Patients from the South West region of the Netherlands can come to us for all complex metabolic disorders. For a number of specific disorders we have received additional official recognition by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. We have divided these disorders into specific sub-centers.
